Characteristics of the wreckage

  • History : Saumur was a freighter cargo cargo, with a story marked by the Second World War. He was torpedoed by a British submarine during the war, which led to his loss. This wreck testifies to the dramatic maritime events of this period.
  • Dimensions and structure : The Saumur is 108 meters in length and 13.5 meters of Master Bau. Currently, the wreck is partly detached: the rear is lying on starboard, while the rest of the boat is placed straight on its keel. Divers can admire the propeller, saffron and even the rescue propeller, all well preserved despite the time. The wreck is very heavily armed with machine guns, easily identifiable on the site.
  • Location : The wreck rests at a depth of 40 meters, about 200 meters from the wreck of the astrée. The background is very muddy, which can make diving a little more delicate. It is important to pay attention to palm to avoid lifting too many sediment and reduce visibility.
  • Marine life : Saumur has become an artificial habitat rich in marine life. Divers can observe a variety of fish, crustaceans and other underwater life forms. The crevices and the cavities of the wreckage are often colonized by anemones, sponges and algae, adding color and life to the site.
  • Access and security : Diving on the wreckage of the Saumur is recommended for experienced divers ( level 2 FFESSM minimum), due to the depth and conditions of the bottom. It is essential to prepare the diving well, to respect security practices and to use the appropriate equipment to explore safely. The submarine lamps are useful for exploring the details of the wreckage, in particular the interior parts and armed equipment.
