Characteristics of the wreckage

• History : The Saumur was a cargo ship whose history was deeply marked by the Second World War. It was torpedoed by a British submarine during the war, leading to its loss. This wreck bears witness to the dramatic maritime events of that period.
• Dimensions and Structure : The Saumur is 108 meters long and 13.5 meters wide. Currently, the wreck is partially detached: the stern lies on its starboard side, while the rest of the ship rests upright on its keel. Divers can admire the propeller, rudder, and even the spare propeller, all well-preserved despite the passage of time. The wreck is heavily armed with machine guns, easily identifiable on the site.
• Location : The wreck lies at a depth of 40 meters, approximately 200 meters from the wreck of the Astrée. The seabed is very muddy, which can make diving a bit more challenging. It is important to be careful when finning to avoid stirring up too much sediment and reducing visibility.
• Marine Life : The Saumur has become an artificial habitat teeming with marine life. Divers can observe a variety of fish, crustaceans, and other forms of underwater life. The crevices and cavities of the wreck are often colonized by anemones, sponges, and algae, adding color and life to the site.
• Access and Safety : Diving on the Saumur wreck is recommended for experienced divers (Level 2 FFESSM ) due to the depth and seabed conditions.
